Man, it can be rough just getting out of bed in the morning.
As the years go by, mental illness is becoming less and less stigmatised, allowing people of all ages and genders to feel comfortable opening up about those unfavourable emotions and intrusive thoughts.
And while it can feel incredibly lonely, there are no bounds to who can relate.
According to Black Dog Institute, ‘one in five (20%) Australians aged 16-85 experience a mental illness in any year.’
So even if you haven’t experienced mental illness yourself, chances are you know someone who has.
And while it’s hard enough dealing with the struggles of Depression, Anxiety, and various other disorders daily, the pressures of running a business can pile on quickly.
So what are some ways to reduce these pressures, without throwing in the towel completely?
Don’t be afraid to reduce your hours.
Put your feet up once in a while. Relax!
We should never feel guilty about taking that Friday arvo early-mark or turning the weekend into a long one.
Being able to identify when you’ve hit your limits is invaluable as a business owner.
Everyone needs time to recharge. Whether that involves a tower of chicken nuggets and a good Netflix show, or a weekend camping getaway, it’s essential to fuel the soul with the things that make you happy- whatever that may be.
A positive state of mind will reflect in your business dealings, and in turn, attract more work.
Depressive disorder and procrastination make a VERY unattractive couple. The type of couple you take a look at and think, ‘boy, they would produce some ugly offspring.’
Staying on top of your everyday tasks can be challenging, but effective planning and structure will ensure the work gets done.
There’s nothing more daunting than a mountain of tasks building up and casting a shadow over your entire week.
Breaking down your larger objectives into step-by-step easily achievable goals makes your daily planning a lot simpler to get a handle on.
It’s important to pace yourself- and set reasonable expectations for your desired outcomes.
Disconnect. Disengage. Sever the virtual umbilical cord!
Most mornings, the first thing we’ll do upon waking is check our phones. We are instinctively starting our days answering to other people.
Why? What do we owe these people that come first before we’ve even had a chance to drown ourselves in morning coffee?
Reducing your screen-time can do wonders for your mental health.
Try switching off all non-essential notifications for 24-hours and see how it makes you feel. You may notice a decline in anxious feelings in the absence of social pressures.
While these methods aren’t a one-size-fits-all remedy, they should at least get you thinking about all the different mechanisms business owners are using to get through the day.
Truthfully, mental illness is a minefield of extreme complexity and not something we can simplify down into a 500-word solution.
But if you can take away one thing from this blog, let it be the resonating fact that you are not alone, and there are many people, resources and organisations out there to support you.
Heads Up is an organisation which promotes healthy workplace support for both individuals and large-scale companies.
You can access information and educational resources on their website, including tools to create a customised ‘action plan’ for your business.
